Winter Joint Pain and Arthritis: Causes and Care

Cold weather does not cause arthritis, but it can make existing joint pain and stiffness feel worse. If your knees ache, fingers feel stiff in the morning or joints swell, it is worth finding out which kind of arthritis it is, because treatment differs.

What is the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis?

 OsteoarthritisRheumatoid arthritis
CauseWear and tear of joint cartilageAutoimmune inflammation
Usual jointsKnees, hips, spine, handsSmall joints of hands and feet, both sides
Morning stiffnessUsually under 30 minutesOften over 30 minutes
Pain patternWorse with activity, better with restWorse after rest, with swelling and warmth

Details are on our pages for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other causes include psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and gout.

Why do joints hurt more in winter?

Cold can make muscles tighter and joints stiffer, and many people move less in winter. Lower sunlight can also reduce vitamin D. Pain feels worse, but the underlying condition is the same.

When should I get tested?

See a doctor if morning stiffness lasts more than 30 minutes, joints are swollen or warm, several joints hurt together, or pain does not settle. Tests may include RA factor, anti-CCP, ESR, CRP, uric acid, vitamin D and, where needed, X-ray or ultrasound. Early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis helps protect joints.

How is homeopathy used for joint pain?

Homeopathic treatment is individualised to the type and location of the pain, what makes it better or worse, and your overall health. It aims to ease pain and stiffness and support mobility. In autoimmune arthritis it is used as a complementary approach, so regular medical care and tests should continue, and medicines should not be stopped without your doctor's advice. Evidence for homeopathy in arthritis is limited.

What helps joints in winter?

  • Keep joints warm and do gentle stretches every morning.
  • Stay active with walking, swimming or yoga. Avoid sudden heavy strain.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, since extra weight loads the knees.
  • Get morning sunlight and check your vitamin D level.
  • Use a firm chair and non-slip footwear to prevent falls.

When is joint pain an emergency?

Seek urgent care for a hot, red, very painful joint with fever, sudden inability to bear weight, or joint pain after an injury.
