Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. IBS can develop after a severe bout of diarrhea (gastroenteritis) caused by bacteria or a virus. IBS might also be associated with a surplus of bacteria in the intestines (bacterial overgrowth) or changes in bacteria in the gut (microflora). It causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both.
IBS is a chronic condition that you'll need to manage long term. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. Others will need medication and counselling.
There are two types of homeopathic treatment for IBS. One is clinical homeopathy where a specific remedy is prescribed for a specific condition. Another is individualised homeopathic treatment, where a homeopathic remedy based on a person's individual symptoms is prescribed after a detailed consultation.
