Myths and Facts

The demand for homeopathic treatment is increasing substantially and the use of homeopathic medicines is spreading more and more nowadays. Many people use homeopathy as their first choice of treatment, whereas many others who desire to make it their preferred choice are reluctant because of certain unrealistic myths in their minds. So, here we have busted few myths about homeopathy and shared a few interesting facts about this therapy.

Myth 1: Homoeopathy is an unproven science.

Fact: Homeopathy is a proven therapy, used successfully for over 200 years in around 170 countries; supported by scientific studies. Many clinical studies have been conducted in India as well as other countries. There is a large body of evidence from scientific research data, control clinical studies and clinical outcome trials conducted by various molecular biologists, physicists and nanotechnologists all around the world who have proven that homeopathy is scientific.

Myth 2: Homeopathy is a placebo therapy.

Fact:  The curative effect of homeopathic medicine has been observed in millions of cases with wonderful results, so saying that Homeopathy is placebo is irrational.

Myth 3: Homeopathy gives the same white medicines for all diseases

Fact:  Many people feel that all homeopathic medicines are the same in the form of white sugar pills and these pills do not contain any medicinal value. BUT WHAT SEEMS TO IS NOT TRUE! These white sugar pills acts only as vehicles or carriers for the medicines, which are alcohol based. There are more than 3000 medicines and 10 variable potencies (powers of medicines) of each medicine, making more than 30,000 various permutation and combinations. These medicines are poured in these white sugar pills for consumption.

Myth 4: Homeopathy is slow to act and does not work in emergency.

Fact: No really! Infact, people who see excellent and quick results in many acute and chronic cases, they have a different view all together. Homeopathy has wonderful remedies to give quick relief in acute conditions like fever, cold and cough, pneumonia, diarrhea, migraine, injuries, etc. The best part is Homeopathic medicines act rapidly and the effect lasts much longer, as the disease is eradicated from its roots. The time taken for relief depends on the chronicity of the disease.

Unfortunately, people go to a homeopath when everything else has failed. They consider homeopathy as a last resort and by then the disease would have progressed quite a bit. In such situation, the treatment will now naturally take longer than in case of using homeopathy right from the beginning. Severity of disease increases with time. So, one should approach a homeopath at early onset of symptoms for better and quick results.

Myth 5: Homeopathic medicines contain steroids

Fact: With the myth in mind that homeopathy acts slow, people get surprised when they see quick results and they feel that homeopathic medicines contain steroids. But it is not true at all. Homeopathic medicines are prepared from natural substances and are sweet. THERE ARE NO STEROIDS in homeopathic medicines. Homoeopathic pharmacies have strict standardization and quality control systems. However, if anybody has doubt regarding the contents of homeopathic medicines, they can get them tested at a laboratory for steroids. There are some specific tests that help evaluate the presence of steroids in a given compound.

Myth 6: Homeopathic medicines cannot beat antibiotics

Fact: Many infections can be wonderfully abated and controlled with just homeopathic medicines, without the use of antibiotics. Moreover, there is absolutely no chance of drug resistance in Homeopathy, unlike antibiotic medications.

Myth 7: Homoeopathy is a 'magic remedy' that can treat any disorder.

Fact: Homoeopathy, like any other field of medicine, has its limitations in treating cases where surgery is unavoidable.

Myth 8: There are a lot of food restrictions with homeopathic medicines

Fact: A reasonable gap of 20-30 minutes before and after meal of taking Homeopathic medicines rules out any food restrictions in routine. Hence, in general, there is no restriction to any food (as commonly asked by the patients).

However, in some cases, certain restrictions on food are mandatory in any system of medicine for effective treatment. For example, diabetics are not allowed to consume foods that are high in sugar, and the intake of salt should be reduced by those with high blood pressure. These restrictions are applicable irrespective of whether patients opt for allopathic or homeopathic treatment. In such cases, we give personalized dietary plan to all those who require change in their diet or restrictions according to their disease profile.

One may take Tea, Coffee, onion, garlic etc. (in moderate quantity), if not specifically restricted by the treating physician.

Myth 9: Homeopathy cannot be taken along with other medications

Fact: Homeopathy can be taken as an add-on or complementary therapy along with other therapies or allopathic medicines. However, the treatment should be planned and properly implemented. It is important that you share the information with your homeopathic physician about the medicines you are already taking during your consultation. Also, it is advisable that a half an hour gap is maintained between homeopathic and other medications.

Myth 10: Diabetic patients cannot take homeopathic medicines as they are sweet

Fact: Homeopathic medicines do not contain glucose (harmful in diabetics). They are made of a complex sugar called lactose. The actual amount of sugar in homeopathic medicines consumed over a period of one week is not more than one teaspoon. If the patient still feels hesitant, homeopathic medicines can be taken in liquid form which is not sweet.

Myth 11: Homeopathy requires a strict diet

Fact: There is no such diet restriction in homeopathy. However, certain restrictions on food are mandatory in any system of medicine for effective treatment. For example, diabetics are not allowed to consume foods that are high in sugar, and the intake of salt should be reduced by those with high blood pressure. These restrictions are applicable irrespective of whether patients opt for allopathic or homeopathic treatment.

Myth 12: Homeopathy cannot treat serious/advanced medical conditions.

Fact: THomoeopathy is just like any other medical system wherein various conditions from acute to chronic can be treated. One can approach a homeopath for a simple Cold to Cancer.

Based on the severity and pathological changes, homoeopaths guide the patients whether to take medication or to go for surgery. Every homeopath is well aware of the scope and limitations of his system.

Myth 13: Homeopathic doctors are not qualified enough. They are quacks.

Fact: Qualified doctors practice Homeopathy in most parts of the world. In India, it takes 5 and half years to graduate as a homeopathic doctor. Homoeopathy is recognized by an Act of the Parliament. The syllabus of this course is similar to conventional medicine.

Myth 14: Homeopathy always aggravates the disease condition during the initial days of treatment

Fact: In some cases where the patient approaches homoeopathy after some suppressive treatments, homoeopathic medicines will bring them to the surface before curing it. It is called Homoeopathic aggravation, and it will disappear in the course of treatment.

Myth 15: Self medication in Homeopathy is harmless

Fact: This stands false with any therapy and so with Homeopathy. Just knowing few drugs by its name without knowing its pharmacology will cause unwanted side effects in long duration. So it is always wise to consult a homoeopathy doctor to start with a treatment.

Myth 16: Homeopathy is simply herbal medicine.

Fact: Homeopathy is much more than herbal medicine. It has medicines sourced from herbs, minerals, chemicals, animal products, organisms, etc. And, very importantly, it is backed by a sophisticated method of medicine preparation, sound scientific principles and deep philosophy.

Myth 17: Homeopathy does not diagnose or investigate before treating a disease

Fact: Like any other system of medicine, homeopathy also needs a thorough diagnosis and investigation before a treatment can start. All sort of investigations are required and useful for better and effective homeopathic treatment.
