Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Neurofibromatosis is usually non-cancerous. It is caused by mutations in the gene that controls production of a protein called neurofibromin. This gene is believed to function as a tumor suppressor. The gene mutation occurs due to unknown reasons.
